If you've ever driven past a vinyl shop in Karol Bagh and seen a bright-red scrolling LED sign — "WELCOME TO JAIN GARMENTS, 50% OFF" — you've seen a P10 panel in action. If you've seen the massive glowing cricket scoreboard outside Shivaji Park at an evening match, that's P6 outdoors. In this guide we unpack what the "P" number actually means, how these displays are wired, which controllers run them, and how you'd quote your first job.

1. Pixel pitch — what the P really means

In LED display terminology, P10 means "pitch 10 millimeters" — the center-to-center distance between adjacent LEDs on the panel. A smaller pitch means higher resolution per square meter but costs more:

PanelPixel pitchPixels/m²Typical useMin viewing distance
P10 outdoor10mm10,000Shop signage, political rallies10m
P8 outdoor8mm15,625Highway billboards8m
P6 outdoor6mm27,778Mall façades, stadium corners6m
P5 indoor5mm40,000Shop-window signage, auditoriums5m
P4 indoor4mm62,500Reception desks, retail4m
P3 indoor3mm111,111Studios, corporate lobbies3m

Rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance (in meters) ≈ pixel pitch (in mm). Beyond that distance, individual pixels blend to the eye.

2. How a P10 module is physically built

A single P10 outdoor module is typically 320×160mm, housing a 32×16 pixel grid = 512 pixels. The construction stack is:

  1. PCB — FR-4 substrate with copper traces and SMD or DIP LED mounting pads.
  2. LEDs — DIP (through-hole, outdoor, highest brightness) or SMD 2727/3535 (surface-mount, slimmer).
  3. Driver ICs — typically MBI5024, MBI5020, or ICN2038 — one IC drives 16 LED columns.
  4. Row-select chips — typically 74HC138 or 74HC595 shift registers that select which row is scanned.
  5. Hub75 interface — a 16-pin ribbon connector carrying RGB1, RGB2, address lines, clock, latch, OE.
  6. IP-rated enclosure — IP65 or IP67 for outdoor, open-frame for indoor.

2.1 Scan rate — the hidden spec that matters

Panels are rated 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 scan. "1/4 scan" means at any instant, 1 out of every 4 rows is lit; the panel refreshes by cycling through them fast enough that the eye sees a continuous image. Lower scan rates = brighter panels but more visible banding under camera. For video applications, insist on 1/8 or 1/16 scan with ≥1,920 Hz refresh.

3. Wiring a P10 wall

Modules chain together with ribbon cables (hub75), each row and column of modules forming a daisy chain:

  1. Mount modules into a steel frame, 320×160mm per module.
  2. Connect module 1 → module 2 → module 3... via hub75 ribbons on each row.
  3. Each row terminates at a receiving card (Novastar MRV320 or MRV366) or an HD-player card.
  4. Receiving cards connect back to a sending card (Novastar MCTRL300, MCTRL600 or MCTRL660) via Ethernet.
  5. Sending card accepts HDMI/DVI from your PC or media server.
  6. 5V 60A SMPS units power the modules (one per 4–8 modules at full brightness).
Power rule of thumb: each P10 outdoor module draws ~15–20W at full brightness. A 20-module wall = 400W peak. Always factor 1.3× safety margin on SMPS ratings.

4. Software that drives P-series displays

  • LedEdit — the free app that ships with HD-Player cards (HD-C10, HD-D30). Perfect for simple scrolling text and image sequences. Not for live video.
  • Novastar NovaLCT / NovaStudio. Industry-standard for configuring Novastar sending/receiving cards, calibration and gamma correction.
  • HD-Player management software. For HD-player standalone cards, lets you build playlists on a PC and upload via USB/Wi-Fi.
  • MADRIX, Resolume, Modulo Player. For video-wall mode where the P-wall acts as a giant DVI monitor.

5. How to quote your first P10 job

Let's say a client wants a 2m × 1m outdoor P10 advertisement board. Here's the honest math (October 2026 India market):

  • Modules: 2m × 1m = 2m². At 10,000 pixels/m² and 512 pixels/module, you need 20 modules × ₹900 = ₹18,000.
  • Steel frame + mounting hardware: ₹4,000.
  • HD-Player card + receiving cards: ₹3,500.
  • SMPS 5V 60A: ₹2,200.
  • Hub75 ribbons, power cables, Ethernet: ₹800.
  • Labor (install + commission): ₹4,000.
  • Sub-total: ₹32,500.
  • Add 20–30% margin: final client quote ≈ ₹42,000–₹45,000.

For context, outdoor LED signboard rates in Delhi/Mumbai currently run at ₹18,000–₹25,000 per m² installed. A 2m² quote at ₹42,000 is right in the middle of the market.

6. Common on-site issues

  • One module dim. Check the 5V rail into that module with a multimeter. Voltage drop below 4.6V = thicken the power cable or add an injection point.
  • Half the panel dark. Loose hub75 ribbon. Reseat.
  • Horizontal banding. Scan-rate mismatch — reconfigure in NovaLCT.
  • Flickering under camera. Refresh rate too low. Enable "high-refresh mode" in receiving-card configuration.
  • Dead row. One of the 74HC138 chips is cooked. Replace or swap the module.
